ISH 2024 Franz Volhard Award and Lectureship awardee: Prof. Stephen Harrap

The Awards Committee assists with the selection of awards to individuals, groups or institutions honoured by the Society. This Committee is chaired by the President of the Society (or nominee) and has at least four other members of whom one is the Secretary of the Society. The Awards Committee will assess applications equally on their merits and eligibility

• Nominations will only be accepted for ISH members, with the exception of the ISH Paul Korner and ISH Honorary Fellow Awards.
• Nominations for previous winners of the following ISH awards might be considered if there is an outstanding independent case for that individual.
• ISH Franz Volhard Award and Lectureship for Outstanding Research
• ISH Robert Tigerstedt Lifetime Achievement Award
• ISH Developing World Award
• ISH Paul Korner Award
• Current ISH Council members, Awards Committee members, committee and group chairs will not be eligible to receive awards. Members of committees other than those mentioned above may be eligible to receive awards, at the discretion of the ISH Awards Committee (unless previous winners of previous ISH awards – as listed above).
• Award recipients will normally be required to accept awards in person during the ISH Biennial Scientific Meetings.

To nominate an individual, the following information should be provided in writing:

• A completed nomination form that will include the information below
• Who is nominated (self-nomination is not acceptable)
• For which award is the nomination
• Justification for nomination
• Name and affiliation of primary and secondary sponsors who are both members of the ISH
• Confirmation that the nominee has agreed to be nominated
• Supporting documentation demonstrating nominee’s eligibility
• A copy of the nominee’s curriculum vitae – to be submitted electronically to the Chair of the ISH Awards Committee.

• This award and lectureship was originally endowed by Farbwerke Hoechst in 1972 to commemorate the centenary of the birth of Franz Volhard. The ISH currently sponsors this Award.
• The award shall be made to a person or persons who, in the opinion of the Awards Committee of the Society, shall have initiated in the field of hypertension or in a related discipline, a concept which remains of current interest.
• The recipient shall be invited to deliver to the Society a lecture at the ISH Biennial Scientific Meeting on the topic for which the award is bestowed. Award nominators must clearly state the concept that the nominee has initiated which remains of current interest and provide supporting evidence.

• This award was originally endowed by Merck Sharp & Dohme International in 1974. The ISH currently sponsors this Award.
• The award shall be presented on the recommendation of the Awards Committee of the Society to a person, persons or institution responsible for distinguished work relating to the aetiology, epidemiology, pathology or treatment of high blood pressure.
• The achievements of the recipient should reflect distinguished contributions in research, teaching or clinical activities and successful mentorship of younger colleagues.

• This award was endowed and continues to be funded by the High Blood Pressure Research Foundation of Australia in 2013 to honour the late Paul Korner (internationally renowned expert in the field of hypertension with a special interest in the neuroscience of blood pressure).
• The award shall be presented to a person who has demonstrated outstanding contributions to research on hypertension in the broad fields of neurology and neuroscience.

New Award from 2024

Two Outstanding Woman in Hypertension Research Awards will be offered – one to a researcher in a mid-career position and one to a senior researcher – to recognise, encourage and inspire women in science and medicine in the field of hypertension and related cardiovascular diseases.

Senior women researchers who have given outstanding service to the ISH and / or made exceptionally distinguished contributions to experimental and / or clinical research in hypertension may be nominated to receive an Outstanding Woman in Hypertension Research Award.

The Outstanding Woman in Hypertension Award for a woman in a mid-career position will recognise a woman researcher who is 35-45 years of age or 10 full years after postgraduate qualifications who has given outstanding service to the ISH and / or made exceptional contributions to experimental and / or clinical research in hypertension.

• These awards were established in 2012 to encourage new investigators and recognise excellence in scientific contribution and are administered by the Awards Committee, with input from the New Investigator Committee.
• They will be awarded at the Biennial Scientific Meetings of the Society to new investigators judged from a group of finalists to have given the best oral and poster presentations at the Biennial Scientific Meetings of the Society.
• The finalists will be selected from among eligible presenters on the basis of scores of their abstracts allocated to oral and poster presentation sessions.
• The presenters must be new investigators undertaking a research higher degree or within ten years of graduation with a doctoral or equivalent qualification.
• The finalists must provide evidence of their research higher degree student status, or the date of their graduation in advance of the Biennial Scientific Meetings.
• The winners will be selected by the Awards Committee, or their representative(s), in an open competition during the Biennial Scientific Meetings.
